Wigan Athletic - The Weeks Transfer Gossip
The focus of this weeks movement around the DW Stadium has been mostly about Roberto Martinez but there have been one or two players grabbing some column inches also.
Roberto Martinez might as well start with the gaffer and get it out of the way, on Monday Athletic Bilbao were reportedly sizing Martinez up to take over from out going Joaquin Caparros, but that was all just a smokescreen
Aston Villa wanted Martinez, Dave Whelan gave the Spaniard 24 hours to make a decision on whether to go to Villa Park or stay put at Wigan, the Latics fans held their breaths, we all know the outcome, Bobby`s popularity rating went through the roof.
Steve Gohouri the big Ivory Coast international defender signed a contract extension at the beginning of the week, giving him another two years at the Latics.
Oussama Mrabet 17 year old French wonder kid is linked with spending the summer with Wigan, with a view to becoming a Latics player should he sufficiently impress the coaching staff.
Charles N`Zogbia away with the French squad, where he starred and scored the games only goal in their friendly against Poland, N`Zogbia stated to some French news agencies that he is set to leave the Latics saying: "...I want to sign with a bigger club, with bigger goals who can play in Europe and also help me with France.
'I said to them that if I am still at Wigan then I would give them 200 per cent, as I am loyal to the club.
'But they have opted for a transfer and I hope it will happen under good conditions and that everyone will be happy.'
Although Newcastle and Sunderland appear to think they are the bigger clubs that Charlie is talking about, it is very unlikely that he would go back to the North East and it looks nailed on that he will be signing for Liverpool very soon.
Hugo Rodallega away with Colombia in the South American football tournament, the Copa América, Hugo has been speaking about the clubs that are chasing him, though he does say that he is happy with the Latics, Hugo said: 'I'm happy at Wigan, but if the opportunity arises to go to another larger team, who give me the chance to fight for a title, I could and would accept it gladly.'
One of `those` teams are supposedly La Liga side Sevilla who said on the matter: 'Formally we have not presented an offer to Wigan for the Colombian Hugo Rodallega, we have certainly followed him like with many other footballers'
A wait and see then, but with Hugo entering the final year of his current deal the Latics must be considering all options.
Craig Mackail-Smith appears to be one player not coming to the DW Stadium, despite all the media talk surrounding the Latics having a bid accepted for the 27 year old striker, it would appear that it isn`t Wigan that made the bid, Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed this by tweeting: 'Keep hearing Wigan in for Craig but no bid as of yet."
No news this week on Ali Al-Habsi or Pablo Piatti, obviously with all the attention surrounding Martinez and his future, player dealings have taken a back seat for a couple of days. One interesting fact to come out of Dave Whelans interview on TV regarding Martinez was that Latics have now bought the training ground at Christopher Park and are set to spend heavily on it improving the facilities.
