Wigan Athletic supporters have more than a passing interest in the CONCACAF Gold Cup that is currently taking place in the USA, with Latics players Hendry Thomas and Maynor Figueroa representing Honduras there is a little piece of Central America in every Latics fans heart.
Los Catrachos are 2nd in group B after an opening game 0-0 draw against Guatemala followed by a 7-1 thrashing of Grenada, they now face group leaders Jamaica on Monday knowing a draw will be enough to qualify for round two and the knock-out stages of the competition.
The pasting of Grenada put a smile back on Honduras faces after they struggled in the opening game, and although they fell a goal behind Thomas and co bounced back to trounce 'The Spice Boys`, Carlo Costly bagged a hat-trick, Jerry Bengston grabbed two, Walter Martinez and Alfredo Mejia added the others.
If Honduras can beat Jamaica on Monday there would be a great chance that they would face underdogs Panama in the next round, Panama surprisingly lead Group C ahead of the USA and Canada following a great victory over the Yanks yesterday.
The current group standings with just one game remaining are:
Group A
Mexico - 6
Costa Rica - 4
El Salvador - 1
Cuba - 0
Group B
Jamaica - 6
Honduras - 4
Guatemala - 1
Grenada - 0
Group C
Panama - 6
USA - 3
Canada - 3
Guadeloupe - 0
The ¼ final schedule:
Group A runner-up v Group B runner-up
Group A winner v Group B/C third-place
Group B winner v Group C runner-up
Group C winner v Group A/B third place
Carlo Costly and Jerry Bengston are in 7th heaven
