Wigan Athletic - Martinez On Pre-Season

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez has been speaking about his preparations for the pre-season schedule which starts when the 1st team players return from their breaks on the 7th July.

As usual the Latics are planning two training camps abroad and a number of friendlies, of which the majority would appear to be low key, though there is the promise of a biggy at the DW Stadium on the 6th August.

There are two international tournaments on going at the moment that have Latics players involved, the Copa America and the Gold Cup and Martinez has revealed that the players involved there, Antolin Alcaraz, Hugo Rodallega and Hendry Thomas will have slightly different regimes than the rest of the squad.

Speaking to the Latics official website Martinez said:'We have a number of players who have been representing Wigan Athletic in the Copa America and Gold Cup over the summer, and their programme will be slightly different from the rest of the team.

'But in general we have a good pre-season programme planned with plenty of variation that includes trips abroad which we are still to finalise.'

'A number of friendly fixtures are pencilled in and are also just waiting to be finalised.

'Last season's preparations were coming on the back of a World Cup which makes a big difference to your schedule.

'This season's training will be different but the concepts will be the same and the volume of work will also follow the same blue-print.

'We always aim to work in three different environments during pre-season, so there will be two trips abroad as well as our usual surroundings at Christopher Park.

'So the skeleton of the programme will be largely the same but the needs from the work will be very different to last time round.'
