Latics Go Down To Bolton In Mersey Masters

Wigan Athletic past players were knocked out of the Selco Mersey Masters tournament at the Echo Arena yesterday when they went down 2-1 to Bolton Wanderers in the group B decider.

Pitched in what was termed the group of death alongside Tranmere Rovers and Bolton Wanderers, the Latics started off their tournament by beating favourites Tranmere 3-1 with goals from Andy Lyons (2) and John Doolan.

Bolton then saw off Tranmere 4-3 setting up the group decider against the Latics.

John Doolan scored his second goal of the tournament equalising David Lee's opener for Bolton, but Simon Charlton scored the winner with a shot that beat Latics keeper Simon Farnworth from distance.

Small consolation but Bolton were absolutely hammered in the final by a rampant Liverpool side 5-1 with goals from Patrick Berger (2), Bjorn Torre Kvarme (2) & Paul Walsh.
