Latics Fly Off To Ístersund

Wigan Athletic have headed off to Sweden today (Monday) as the preseason training begins in earnest.

Getting ready for the big kick-off against Norwich City on August 13th is of the upmost importance and, following last seasons opener against Blackpool when the Latics came un-stuck to a 4-0 home trouncing, Roberto Martinez is determined that his squad will be ready this time, so its off to Ístersund, Sweden for phase one of a three phased preparation plan.

Speaking to Latics World Martinez said: "We are quite familiar with Ostersund, they treat us very well and its a place that we are used to"

"Everything is going to be aerobic work trying to build that base that you need"

"Going to a different environment clearly helps the work, the players really need to push their body"

"They are going there to work, rest and eat"

Whilst the boss is looking at the players fitness it sounds like his assistant Graeme Jones is ready to give the lads a beasting, speaking to the Wigan Evening Post Jones said: "I think everyone's had a long enough break and got over the rigours and challenges of last season, and are ready to go again"

"We're all creatures of a habit, and I think you miss your routines sometimes.

"Some of the players have maybe eaten and drank a little bit too much over the summer, and they'll be glad to get back to work."
