'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wigan Athletic 2-0 Al Ahli

Wigan Athletic had a late, late switch to this afternoons schedule friendly in Austria, firstly Turkish side Mersin Idmanyurdo pulled out, then stand-in, Greek Super League side Panionos, decided that they couldn`t make it after all, so in stepped UAE side Al Ahli to save the day.

Latics won the game 2-0 with both goals coming from Victor Moses in the first 21 minutes of the match.

From the match report on the clubs official site: Moses was absolutely electric at times. His first came after he left his defender for dead far out by the left touchline, he rode a couple of challenges and as he ghosted into the box he chipped the ball home at the far post on the angle.

His second came originally from James McArthur's clever pass wide to Franco Di Santo on the right, and Moses beat McCarthy to the ball from a yard out.

Latics had other chances throughout the game, and a few really decent saves from Al Ahli keeper Yousif Alzabi, the crossbar, and Mohamed Diame somehow not being given a penalty when tackled to the ground, denied Latics making it far more comfortable.

Latics team:

Trialist, Gohouri, McCarthy, Caldwell, Watson (Diame, 46), Di Santo, (Sammon 46), Moses (Redmond 80), Gomez, McArthur (Thomas, 68), Boyce (Golobart, 46), Figueroa.

Subs not used: Pollitt, Thomas, Lopez and Stam.

Speaking to Latics Player boss Roberto Martinez said: 'The game looked in doubt earlier in the day after Panionios pulled out of the scheduled game but I'm very happy we played what was a very demanding match.

"It's been a great trip overall and now we can head back home and get ready for the next phase of preseason.'

The team will head home now and plan for the next friendly away at Preston on Sunday.
