Latics Looking To Secure David Jones Signing

Wigan Athletic are hopeful of securing the signature of former Manchester United, Derby County and Wolves midfield man David Jones, who has been training with the Latics throughout preseason.

The 26 year old made 12 Premier League appearances for Mick McCarthy's side last season scoring one goal, though he was sidelined with injury for part of the campaign he looks to be fighting fit at the moment if yesterdays display for the Latics in the win at Preston is anything to go by.

The Southport born former England under 21 international joined the Latics primarily to keep his fitness up, but his ability, attitude and desire have impressed boss Roberto Martinez who wants to tie Jones down to a contract at the club.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post following the game at Preston Martinez spoke about Jones, he said: "We will be working extremely hard to try to persuade him his future lies at Wigan.

"If we can do that I'm sure he will be a big, big asset for this football club.

"David is a very talented player, technically very gifted, tactically very clever, and has great experience in the Premier League.

"He is 26 but has a great desire to learn, and has a sweet left foot.

"We will be working very hard to make sure he becomes a part of our football club and hopefully that will be sorted out very soon.

"At the beginning he wanted to come in and get himself fit, and he impressed us all from day one.

"I was already a big admirer of his from the work he did at Wolves, and when a player like him becomes available you can't let the opportunity pass you by."
