Latics Players Are One In A Million

The Wigan Athletic first team squad are one in a million after donating their bonus for Premier League survival, a whopping £1 million, to 'The Wigan Boys and Girls Club' project.

The Boys and Girls Club is the brainchild of Latics chairman and owner Dave Whelan who wants to help today's local youth, just like he was helped whilst growing up, he puts a lot of the success he has achieved in his life down to the now defunct Wigan Boys club helping him to curb his wayward ways when he was just a youngster.

The project has been struggling for cash since part of the funding was lost when Government ordered cuts to the North West Development Agency meant that a £2.8 million grant was withdrawn, but this gesture by the Latics squad has given a massive shot in the arm both financially and morally to the team working on the scheme.

Speaking to The Wigan Observer, Latics owner Dave Whelan, who also donated the proceeds from the sale of his autobiography to the project, said: "As far as I'm aware, no other football club has ever donated to charity in the way our players are doing.

"I spoke to the Council's Chief Executive, Joyce Redfearn, the other day, and she said she couldn't believe the players were giving £1m to charity.

"It is a remarkable, unique gesture, and one that makes you very proud to be associated with Wigan Athletic Football Club."

Captain Fantastic

Latics skipper Gary Caldwell appears to be the main instigator of the gesture and Whelan couldn't speak highly enough of his clubs skipper, he continued: "Roberto Martinez has built a great team spirit at the club, and he has a great captain in Gary Caldwell"

"Gary is a very democratic man, and very fair in what he wants to do.

"He's been the spokesman for the team, who have backed him up, and it's wonderful news for the whole town."
