Adrian Lopez About To Stake A Claim

Wigan Athletic defender Adrian Lopez looks like he's ready to make the step to challenge for a first team slot at the heart of the Latics defence.

The 24 year old made just four appearances for the first team last season and only one of those came in the Premier League, the 1-0 defeat away at Manchester City, but, following some impressive performances in preseason it would appear that the former Deportivo La Coruna player is about to stake a claim for a regular spot in the side.

Lopez has a wealth of experience in La Liga having made over 50 appearances for Deportivo where he has experienced some intense periods in La Liga. He also represented them in European competition.

In Sundays friendly against Villarreal, Lopez looked all the part a class defender, a nice turn of pace, he read the game well and was strong in the tackle, never flustered, he also had a good sense of positional play and partnered Gary Caldwell as though the pair had played together on a regular basis.

Speaking after the game on Sunday about the performance of Lopez, Latics boss Roberto Martinez said: 'Adrian (Lopez) made a great contribution which bodes well for the new season"

The potential that we have heard about in Adrian Lopez could be about to be realised this coming season, let's hope so.

He looked very composed on Sunday, would expect him to start pushing for a starting place this season
