Moses Set To Lead Wigan Out Of The Zog
Wigan Athletic may have lost a prodigious talent when Charles N'Zogbia moved to Aston Villa recently in a £9.5 million deal, but in Victor Moses they just might have the man to take his place.
N'Zogbia is a special talent, his form in the back end of last season was simply breathtaking, any team would be weaker if a player of his stature left and he was undoubtedly the Latics talisman, so where do Martinez and Wigan go from here?
Step up Victor Moses, signed in January 2010 from Crystal Palace the 20 year old forward playing wide man has been eased into Premier League life, starts have been sparing, just two in his first season and eight last time out, he has been used mainly as an impact sub with 25 appearances coming from the bench, now is his time to stake a claim.
Preseason has been good for Moses, starring in games, most notably the away day at Preston and last Sundays win at the DW Stadium over La Liga side Villarreal, scoring goals for fun he looks to be hitting the right form at the right time.
Moses looks certain to start on the left in Saturdays Premier League opening day encounter with new boys Norwich City, his explosive pace, direct football and eye for goal can be a real asset to the Latics, if he couples this with a responsibility for his team, tracking back when not in possession and producing an end result as regularly as he has shown this summer then we all could be saying, 'Charlie who?'.
Latics boss Roberto Martinez hopes that Moses can be his shining light this season, following N'Zogbia's departure he spoke about Moses and the opportunity to take the next step, Martinez said: "He (Moses) is a special talent"
"It's a real shock to any player to move up to the Premier League, but since he's been here he's added maturity and experience to his undoubted ability."
"Charlie has left a big hole in our team but that vacancy is a big opportunity for Victor to step up.
"Victor is a different kind of player to Charlie but has the same quality that sets players like that apart from the rest."
The big test comes this season, can Moses lead the Latics out of the shadow of N'Zogbia? Ask me again at 5pm on Saturday, the answer may just be a little bit clearer.
Leading the pack, Victor Moses
