Wigan Athletic - Alcaraz Faces Lengthy Lay-Off

Wigan Athletic defender Antolin Alcaraz is facing a long period on the treatment table after a scan revealed that the Paraguay international has a ruptured calf muscle.

Alcaraz left the field of play after 37 minutes of Saturdays game with Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, at first it appeared to be a pulled calf but the scan has shown a much more serious problem.

First assessments say that he could be out for a minimum of 6 weeks, with 8 - 12 weeks more likely, obviously Latics boss Roberto Martinez is shocked at the extent of the injury and length of time he will be without one of his key players.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post Martinez said: "We`re hoping he`ll only be out for six or seven weeks, but the worst-case scenario is two months, maybe even three"

"You have to be very, very careful when it comes to soft-tissue injuries, because if you come back too early you are risking further damage, it is a major, major blow for us and we are going to miss Antolin badly over the next few weeks."

"Probably it`s a message from Antolin`s body that enough is enough, and that he needs a little bit of a regeneration period - which we`ll make sure he gets."

"You cannot blame the player or the medical department in this instance"

"You have to blame the manager and I take full responsibility for what happened.

"Because of the injuries in the squad, I had to take a bit of a gamble and unfortunately we got punished extremely harshly.

"All we can do now is help Antolin to recover fully and make sure he is back fit and raring to go for the remaining two-thirds of the season."

We probably should have kept Steven Caldwell, at least until a replacement was ready..

We'll have to try and make a move in the transfer market now - even if it is only a loan!
