Wigan Athletic Attendances On The Up

Wigan Athletic appear to have bucked the trend with falling attendances, even though it's early days in the new campaign, the first two fixtures at the DW Stadium have seen a marked increase in the number of fans through the turnstiles on the same period last season.

The average attendance for the first two games of the season have fallen consecutively for the past three years, but this time round the average is up by over 2,000, a rise of 14% and this despite the fact that in Norwich and QPR (no disrespect) the opponents weren't the most glamorous, the QPR game had a 12:30 kick-off which usually adversely affects the attendance of games, and the Challenge Cup final, that Wigan Warriors qualified for, also clashed with the QPR game.

The Latics have announced that season ticket sales are on the up, there were some great incentives to encourage families to get joint packages, this appears to have been a success and gate prices at the DW Stadium are once again the lowest in the Premier League. Perhaps the biggest factor though in the increase of supporters through the turnstiles is that the team are doing well.

Last season's run-in saw the Latics pull off some great victories, the home game with West Ham was an amazing match full of drama and emotion, the euphoria of the final day victory at Stoke had a cup final win feeling about it and the celebrations ran into the summer. Latics boss Roberto Martinez remained at the helm despite the attentions of Aston Villa, again this appears to have got the supporters interest rekindled as they get behind the team by showing their support through the turnstiles.

The figures below show the average home attendance after the first two games at the DW Stadium since the Latics won promotion to the Premier League:

2011/12 - 17,400
2010/11 - 15,314
2009/10 - 17,412
2008/09 - 18,077
2007/08 - 16,323
2006/07 - 15,497
2005/06 - 20,399

Last season made us all realise that faith in Roberto and team and the support is more important then booing, we know as loyal supporters come to watch the Latics to support the players, manager, chairman and team and not 3 points, win lose or draw, sing your hearts out and clap our players!

keep the performances and the points collection going, and the average will creap up this year. The longer it continues the higher it will go. I think we could reach 19,000, as the home end ar attracting more locals already
