Wigan Atheletic - Reading The Signs

Wigan Atheletic - Reading The Signs

Throughout last season there were signs that the team had spirit, quality and the odd touch of class, Spurs, Blackpool and Stoke away, Birmingham and West Ham at home. It was clear that despite the league situation, we had what it took to achieve the main goal of staying up. These good performances were of course interspersed with lapses, errors and results that would have been pointed out as the obvious signs we were not good enough had we failed to survive. Reading the mixed signs and predicting the right outcome is difficult to say the least, with only Roberto and a few stalwarts getting it right last season before the 20/20 hindsight was available.

As I`m sure everyone did, I reviewed the fixture list. I decided that the first 2 sets of 3 games would give a guide to shaping our season. Firstly 3 games against relegation fodder, then 3 games against what should be mid to top end teams, both useful guides to our final position. We`ve started reasonably well, and begun to set a platform for the season which should see us clear of the bottom 3. We`re up to 5 points ahead of some relegation rivals already, 7 games unbeaten, 2 points and 11 goal difference better off. Crowds are up, confidence is up, and Roberto is looking up (the table). If we do well in the next 3 games, then the target of top half will be very achievable.

For those of you that are scared we might slump, Roberto was asked on MOTD2 about West Brom, and Blackburn, and how he would pick his team up after 3 defeats, I was shouting at the telly, because we haven`t suffered that form in 2 years, which of course passed the national pundits by.

I agree the next three games are important and will give some indication as to where we are as a team, but every season I feel its only by the end of October that things start to settle, new signings, players finding form etc all take time, but once Octobers gone, and usually 1/4 of the seasons games, you can have some feeling as to how things are going to shape up

I think it is more the performances than the results in the opening games whoever the opposition is tbh. An unbeaten run is a solid start to the season and if we average around 4-5pts every 3 games we will comfortably stay up :)

As good a start as we could have hoped for and given the performance, it wouldn't outlandish to say we could have won all 3 games. In fact i believe if we were to play the same three games again now i'm confident we would pick up 7-9 points. Newly promoted teams Banana skin over(did anyone welse smell a (FA) rat with when the fixtures came out??) we can now test our mettle against teams most people would expect to be finishing above or around us this season. As Worbo says the start of Nov will give an idea how things are really panning out.

Video Highlights - Wigan Athletic 0 Nottingham Forest 0

The action(?) from yesterday's game at the DW Stadium between Wigan Athletic and Nottingham Forest which ended goalless:

Report - Latics 0 Forest 0 - What A Shocker

Thirteen games to save our Championship status, first up a home game against Nottingham Forest who are on a shocking run of form, conceded 10 goals in their last three matches, three of their first choice defenders missing through injury, they had lost 11 of their 16 away games this season with a -16 goal difference on the road and sat just six points above us in the table, surely a game that we would set out to win.

Checking the team selection I felt slightly optimistic but slightly conf
