Wigan Athletic - The 12th Man - 7/09/11

This weeks 12th Man fans page in the Wigan Evening Post featured a piece from Vital Latics:

Can We Upset The Big City Spenders?

The trip to the newly name Etihad Stadium on Saturday when the Latics take on Manchester City might only be 17 miles down the East Lancs Road, but the hosts may as well be a million miles away when it comes to buying power.

During the summer the two Roberto's, Martinez and Mancini, had the cheque books out in efforts to improve their squads ahead of the new season, at close of business last Wednesday the number of signings both managers had made wasn`t too dissimilar, the Latics making six new additions whilst City brought in nine. Any similarities end there though.

Latics dipped into the Spanish market splashing out £2 million for diminutive winger Albert Crusat from Almeria, City also did a little shopping in Spain, Sergio Aguero signing for a cool £36 million, in fact Citys spending on their nine players came to over £74 million, Latics spent £7 million in total.

Whilst the money men of Manchester flashed the cash to buy the worlds biggest stars, Martinez was a little shrewder, scouring the markets for the best deals and in Crusat he may have bought himself a real bargain. Small in size but big in stature, Crusat is just 5'4" but has a big reputation in La Liga, lightening quick, creative and direct, he would appear to be the man that has been brought in to replace Charles N'Zogbia, he is this summer's new signing that I am most looking forward to seeing play.

Martinez has built a good squad at Wigan with competition all over the pitch, the dealings this last transfer window have seen that competition grow, on Saturday we can hopefully show our mega rich North West neighbours that spending large amounts of cash guarantees nothing and clever spending is the way to go, well you can but hope.
