Roberto Martinez On Carling Cup Defeat

Following Tuesday nights Carling Cup exit at Crystal Palace by two goals to one, Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez spoke about his disappointment in the first half performance that left the Latics two goals down, but he felt that during the second half the team came more into their own and he thought it gave a much needed run out for some of the squad players.

Speaking to Latics official website Martinez said: 'The two first-half goals changed the game completely and credit must go to Crystal Palace who were focused and surprised us in the first 45 minutes.

'In this competition if you are to progress you need to do so as a squad and at times tonight we seemed rusty and didn't have the relationship between players that was to be expected with players playing together for the first time.

'The second-half was more positive however, played mainly in their half and we were able to create some good chances eventually scoring late on.

'It came too late on unfortunately but the attitude from the players was very good; finding spaces and producing good combination play but ultimately the defensive lapses in the first half cost us as we seemed desperate to go forward.'

'Once Palace had their lead they did well to put bodies behind the ball and keep their shape off the ball, but we still managed to score a goal, hit the cross-bar and create another couple of half-chances doing everything we had to get back in the game except score.

'So for many players it has been an exercise that has been much needed - we are a young group but the competition in the squad has to remain strong and this game has given us the opportunity to see more of that competition which will help the team.'
