Stat Attack - Wigan Athletic v Tottenham Hotspur

A new and hopefully regular feature on Vital Latics will be looking at the stats for the upcoming fixture, Wigan Athletic supporter, loudmouthblue, our in house statistician, has kindly taken on this task, over to you LMB:

Wigan Athletic v Tottenham Hotspur

Current form tables show a close run thing

Wigan lie in 8th in the home form table
P6 - W3 - D3 - L0 - F9 - A5 - Pts12 - Gd +4

Spurs lie in 5th in the away form table
P6 - W3 - D2 - L1 - F9 - A3 - Pts11 - Gd +6

Meetings at the JJB/DW since our promotion to the Premier League:

2005/2006 Wigan 1-2 Spurs 26.11.05
A crowd of 22611 saw a cracking game that witnessed Wigan pushing hard for much of the match to cancel out an 8th min Robbie Keane opener only to be caught by a 77th minute sucker punch counter attack goal by Edgar Davids, his first and only goal in a spurs shirt. An 88th Lee McCulloch consolation gave us some hope in the last few minutes but we couldn`t manage a deserved draw. Coming into the game Latics were lying in a lofty 3rd position with 25 points after 13 games with spurs a point behind us in 5th spot, the defeat meant we slipped down to 7th.

2006/2007 Wigan 3 - 3 Spurs 15.04.07 Att. 16,506
With only 2 home games left after this match and relegation looking a distinct possibility we needed to up our game for this one, we did, trouble is so did spurs, chasing a European spot and on the back of a good run, Heskey gave us a 2nd minute lead, only for Berbatov to equalise 2 minutes later this theme continued Baines restored our lead in the 30th min only for Keane to equalise with a hotly disputed penalty in the 35th min. Once again we took the lead through Kilbane in the 60th min only for Keane to net his second with a cracking counter attack with us pushing for a fourth when we should have been looking to close up shop perhaps - we had 21 attempts on goal that day to spurs 11, the game was a proper end to end game one of the best in our premier league tenure. Graham Poll was the ref that day and had one of his usual give every decision to the big club games and disallowed a perfectly good Heskey goal for pushing. It was also the first return to the JJB of Chimbonda and as expected he got booed every time he touched the ball.

2007/2008 Wigan 1 - 1 Spurs 19.04.08 Att. 18,673
For long periods of this season we had looked like sure fire relegation certs, in January Chris Hutchens had been replaced by Steve Bruce and we were looking like a team with a little more steel Wilson Palacios had added quality to our midfield and we pushing for safety, spurs were hovering just above us in mid table obscurity something their fans didn`t like given the quality of players in their squad, Harry Redknapp had done enough to stabilise the team after the disaster of previous manager Juande Ramos but they were certainly not functioning as the quality of players should have.

Berbatov opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a flowing move but just 6 minutes later Heskey equalised - the match was a good quality end to end game with lots of chances for both sides ,both goal keepers having outstanding games - for the second time in 2 seasons the referee cost Wigan the points (this time Lee Probert) when a late free kick from koumas was headed goalwards by Marlon King only to produce a fantastic save by Radek Cerny in the Spurs goal, Antoine Sibierski tapped into an open goal and turned to celebrate only for Probert to give a foul for pushing by Boyce something only he saw.

2008/2009 Wigan 1 - 0 Spurs 11.01.09 Att. 17,500
Spurs came into this game in the bottom 3 and Redknapp was under pressure as his high cost squad struggled on the other hand Latics were looking the part, under Bruce we had pace power and skill and it was showing in our first half of the season showing, in essence we battered spurs that day and a mixture of last ditch defending and bad luck resulted in it looking like a draw, Palacios and Cattermole ruled mid field ,Valencia tormented their full back and Heskey and Zaki tormented Dawson, King & Woodgate, Spurs offered very little on this early Sunday kick off but looked like they had sneaked a point, until in injury time Ryan Taylor swung in his 8th corner and it was met with a bullet header by Figueroa to send the fans still left in the JJB into raptures and give us a richly deserved win, with his first ever goal for us. Shortly afterwards Palacios departed for White Hart lane and Heskey left for Villa, this was the start of the breakup of our best ever team.

2009/2010 Wigan 0 - 3 Spurs 21.02.10 Att. 16,165
This was the first meeting since our 9-1 tonking at WHL earlier in the season so every man and his dog was looking at this match to see how many they would put past us this time, Spurs were riding the crest of a wave pushing for a Champions League place in 4th spot in the table and heading for the FA Cup Final, Latics were consolidating and improving slightly with draws in our last 3 league games after an un ceremonious dumping in the FA cup by 3rd division Notts County and some pre Christmas drubbings.

Jermaine Defoe opened the scoring despite being clearly offside from a Gareth Bale cross to add to his tally of 5 against us in the 9-1 game. The pitch was probably at its worst ever after a shocking spell of snow and rain and was relaid shortly afterwards, this made for a mistake ridden game. On loan Marcelo Moreno missed 2 easy chances when well placed which was the story of his tenure with us, in truth Spurs won at a canter and should have scored well before Pavlyuchenko got 2 late goals to seal a 3-0 victory for Spurs. This was the first and only time that a home game with Spurs had been as one sided as this was, all other games against them at the JJB/DW had been close, end to end rousing games.

2010/2011 Wigan 0 - 0 Spurs 02.04.11 Att. 18,578
Latics went into this game bottom of the league, playing uninspiring football and off the back of a lucky win v Birmingham in which Figueroa had scored the winner deep into injury time. Spurs were pushing for a Champions League spot for the second year running lying in 5th position with a trip to Real Madrid to look forward to the following Tuesday. We were hoping that Redknapp would go easy on us and play his reserve side with a game against European giants coming up, as it happens Bale who was injured and Gallas were the only ones not involved from the side that travelled to Madrid. Not much to be said about this game but Wigan were the better side. Again for the 3rd time against Spurs, poor refereeing decisions this time Andre Mariner, denying one clear and one not so clear penalty appeals. The game was a little of a stalemate but 3 points went begging when Diame put newly signed Connor Salmon through with 3 minutes to go, he shot tamely straight at Gomes when well placed to give him hero status by clinching another deserved home victory against Spurs.

Apart from the2009/10 season Spurs have never had it easy at JJB/DW, in fact 2 draws against them should have been Wigan wins and the first ever win in the first season was lucky to say the least.

Overall home record:

P 6---W1---D3---L2 Goals-F6---A9

Important to remember, Spurs have spent a fortune assembling this squad and the reported loan fee for one season for Adebayor is more than we have paid out for buying any player in our current squad.

This weeks useless info
In the last 100 years spurs have played 17 games on the 24th September winning 11, losing 5, drawing 1, on the road they have played 8 games wining 4 losing 4
