Martinez Speaks On Villa Defeat

Following the defeat at Aston Villa on Saturday, Latics boss Roberto Martinez spoke about being careless in possession, he wasn`t wrong, both Villa goals came from sloppy mistakes by Latics players, but we were never really threatening any way.

Although the players put effort in it was all too much huff, puff but nowhere to go, they looked flat and there wasn`t any real spark in the team, Martinez says by the time we play Bolton, due to the international break, there will be players back from injury and that will allow him to freshen up the team, here`s hoping.

Lets take a look at what the boss told the official website: 'We started with a real focus and imposed ourselves on the game early succession of corners, but we began giving away possession too cheaply and were heavily punished.

'Goals change the dynamic of games and once they (Aston Villa) had taken the lead we began banging our heads against a wall - trying to do the right things but ultimately letting ourselves down by being careless in possession, something we usually pride ourselves on.

'But I can't fault the desire and determination by the players to get back in the game, and in the second-half there were opportunities for us to get a goal that would have changed the game.'

'It's important now that we continue trying to reach those high standards we've set at the club and use the competition in the squad to get better.

'The attitude is there we just need to gain a better understanding of what to do in certain situations; you have to be perfect in games otherwise you'll be punished as we were today.

'Today, we gave a lot but didn't get anything back because in the key moments we were careless, but we'll learn from the experience and make sure it doesn't happen again.'

'The international break has come at a good time for us; it'll allow us to get bodies back, refreshed and begin preparations for Bolton Wanderers.

'We'll have people coming back from injury and suspension which will add to the competition in the squad and sharpen our focus to avoid mistakes that cost us today.'

Definitely need something to stimulate the players

I like to follow the progress of Martinez occasionally. Your looking more like relegation than us right now. I also think it's wrong to brow beat fans who make great effort in following your team, unlike us who are proud of our traveling fans.
