A couple of weeks ago, the Sunday after the Spurs game, I was out taking the dog for a walk over Spencer Road bridge when I noticed a woman putting a bright pink poster on a lamp post, I managed to speak to the woman about what was on the poster:
Emma Hoolin is a 4 year old girl from Whitley in Wigan and she was diagnosed in mid-February this year, Valentines Day, with a childhood cancer called Neuroblastoma.
As a family we know only too well about this cancer, but I won`t go into details on a public forum, the cancer though can be treated, quite successfully, unfortunately some of the cells are hard to detect and this allows the cancer to re-emerge years down the line.
There is treatment in the USA that combines three drugs that 'hunt down' these cells, destroying them so giving full recovery a higher rate of success.
The woman that I spoke to that Sunday morning was Emma`s mum, Jill Hoolin and it was quite obvious that she is trying everything to get the best treatment for her little girl, who wouldn`t, but with the best available being in the USA this costs and Emma's family are trying to raise funds, now I'm not a person who will tell people what to do with their money and if people want or don`t want to donate then that is entirely their business, but I walked away from Jill that Sunday morning and I don`t mind admitting that I was in floods of tears, I want to help
The cost of the treatment is £210,000
This Saturday at the Latics v Bolton game the club have given Emma`s supporters and fundraisers permission to be outside the ground and in the surrounding areas from 1.30pm with bright pink buckets, they want to raise as much money as possible to get Emma to America. Emma is also guest of honour at the match and will be making an appearance on the pitch at half time to what I am sure will be a standing ovation from everyone at The DW Stadium.
To help in some small way I am proposing to walk from the DW Stadium to the Reebok Stadium on Saturday February 11th 2012 for the reverse fixture against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium and I want you to join me, I have already got promises from over 100 people to come with me on this walk and would like as many as possible to join in, I intend for us through sponsorship to raise some money to the Emma Hoolin appeal.
With the route being mostly uphill and covering six miles if you are seriously considering coming along please make sure you do some suitable training before hand. Full details of the route, refreshment breaks and sponsor forms will be published in November
The walk will have media coverage so Emma's plight will be highlighted.
For more information about Emma and her condition visit her website: www.emmahoolin.co.uk/

Please help Emma
