Wigan To Resign From Premier League - Again

Vital Wigan site journo and mega Latics fan Sheikh_Mahand has displayed powers akin to Nostradamus with his visionary article of two years back 'Wigan Set To Resign From The Premier League' which took a sideways look at the stick that Wigan Athletic receive from certain quarters of the media and opposition fans.

Fast forward two years and the Sheikh`s prophetic words rang true when Latics supremo Dave Whelan announced this week "I would resign Wigan from the Premier League".

Whelan was of course referring to suggestions that owners of certain Premier League clubs are toying with the idea of somehow ending relegation from and promotion to the Premier League by setting up a 'franchise', League Managers Association chief executive Richard Bevan claims a group of American and Asian tycoons wish to turn their backs on the rest of English football and make the Premier League a closed shop.

Bevan warns: "There are a number of overseas-owned clubs already talking about bringing about the avoidance of promotion and relegation in the Premier League, if there are four or five more new owners, that could happen."

Whelan responded by saying: "If it was to happen I would resign Wigan from the Premier League and go back and play in the Football League.

"It's a worrying thought that if we get 14 or 15 foreign owners (in the Premier League), they come up with some mad idea and it gets voted through. It would ruin and kill English football.

"It's got to be competitive, every club has got to have that ambition to get to the Premier League, that's why our league is so good. It's an appalling suggestion. It would ruin and kill English football."
