'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The 12th Man 20/10/11 - Wigan Athletic

This weeks 12th Man page in the Wigan Evening Post featured one piece from Vital Latics:

Desperation Creeping In?

Six games, six defeats, it's starting to look a little desperate, Saturdays shambles against Bolton was a real low point for me. Before the game I was quite optimistic, a home match against a struggling side, a chance to get back on track but as soon as I saw the team selection alarm bells started to ring.

Maynor Figueroa arrived back in the UK on Friday and was considered to be suffering from jet lag and so left on the bench, Steve Gohouri chosen to fill-in for Figueroa was, in my opinion, a disastrous decision. Gohouri is no left back, his positional sense is dreadful, he has no left foot and spends too much time looking for free-kicks.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, so why put Gohouri at left back? He`s played there before and on each occasion that he`s filled-in for Figueroa he`s cost us goals and cost us games. We have a young lad on loan from Chelsea, Patrick van Aanholt, he's a left back, he's played there for the past four games and he's been one of our better performers, he didn't even make the bench on Saturday. In front of Gohouri, Martinez played James McCarthy, another right sided player, this left the team with no balance, we were woeful, thankfully it was Bolton that we were playing, a decent side would have had us well and truly buried.

Now we travel to Newcastle for a really tough encounter, the Geordies have made a cracking start to the season, undefeated and currently fourth in the table this will be a formidable game for a Latics side that`s low on confidence, flat in their play and looking like real relegation contenders, a draw up at St. James' Park, with all things considered, would be a terrific result, I'm not holding my breath though.
