'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Dave Whelan Stands By His Man - Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan has emphatically backed Latics manager Roberto Martinez to get it right on the pitch and get the club climbing off the bottom of the Premier League.

Seven straight league defeats has seen the Latics slump alarmingly following a bright start to the season, questions have been raised in some quarters about the security of the manager's position but Whelan says that there is no question of the club parting company with Martinez.

The track record of Martinez at the Latics is as good as those who came before him, he kept the club in the Premier League against the odds on two occassions, in fact last season saw the Latics achieve their 3rd highest points total as a Premier League club and score their second highest number of goals in a Premier League season despite being considered strugglers for most of the campaign.

Speaking to the media about his manager Whelan said: 'Roberto's position is never, ever in question. We stay together. I respect him, and I know I'm going to get 110 per cent from Roberto every time the team takes the field. Things are going against us but we have to keep battling on.

'My spirits are never down. We may be at the foot of the table right now, but we won't be at the end of the season.'
