Martinez Banking On Rodallega Stay

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez is banking on striker Hugo Rodallega finding his goalscoring form and firing the Latics to Premier League safety, rather than cashing in on his Colombia international who is out of contract in the summer

Rodallega has found things difficult this season to say the least, having started just two games and finding the back of the net on just one occasion has been frustrating for the Latics all time leading Premier League marksman

" This may be more to do with his current form, as he wouldn't warrant a fee of more than 2m for a player in the last 6 months of his contract. So no big gamble really."

The 26 year old will be a free agent in the summer but Martinez feels that the best investment would be to keep him at the club and hopefully help him find his form, rather than letting him go now just re-coup some cash, but possibly compromising any chance of the Latics avoiding the dreaded drop.

Speaking to the press Martinez said: "We don`t have the money which other clubs have got to invest.

"But the benefit is that we don`t have to sell players either.

"And it is much more important¬ to keep Hugo playing for us until the end of the season than trying to cash in on him right now. We want him to concentrate¬ on his football¬ and getting back to his best.

"Then we will have to see where we are at the end of the season."

"Any player can have a dip in form and we have got to help him get back to himself with the team. He has it in his DNA to play against the top sides."
