Wigan Athletic shared a goalless draw with Aston Villa at the DW Stadium on Saturday, a result that left Latics boss Roberto Martinez feeling that two points had been dropped rather than one gained.
Martinez felt that with the possession and pressure that his team had they should have scored the goals to win the game, he re-iterated that in the position that the Latics are in its wins not draws that are needed.
Speaking to the Latics official website Martinez said: 'It's a valuable point gained because each one counts between now and the end of the season, and to get that result against Aston Villa you have to do a lot of things well.
'On the other hand, when you reflect on the performance, it feels as though it's two points dropped because we were so controlling for large spells.
'When you win 14 corners and enjoy the possession we did it deserves more of a reward; we worked hard, the concentration levels were very high to keep Aston Villa's pace and unpredictability going forward very quiet.
'In our situation we need to be picking up three points, but I'm very proud at the manner in which the players approached the game and we can look back on a point gained on top of the four points that preceded it against Everton and Bolton Wanderers.'
'Once again Jean Beausejour was a real threat on the left-hand side, and you'll always get quality in the final third with the likes of Jordi Gomez, Victor Moses and Franco Di Santo up there.
'We've got a real threat in the part of the pitch at the moment and even in the first-half you could see how Emmerson Boyce was getting forward to support the attack as well which is a reflection of how much everyone wants to help get the goals to win us games.
'And we showed a balance too; it would have been all too easy to forget about our duties at the back but we looked solid and were a dominating force.
'We just missed that little bit of luck or bounce of the ball to get the rewards; Shay Given has produced a magnificent save to deny Franco Di Santo from winning the game for us which we truly deserved.'
'There's a real enjoyment about the task ahead and togetherness within the squad which combats the nerves and anxiety going into these high pressure games along with the fans.
'We're an example as a football club of how to face adversity and it really deserves more of a reward, but I guarantee that if we continue to show the same attitude that will come.'![]()
