'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Roberto Delighted With Fans Efforts

Wigan Evening Post Latics correspondent Paul Kendrick as kindly agreed to allow Vital Wigan to reproduce the following piece that appeared in the Post last week, the article is reporting on the massive lift that the players received prior to the West Brom game at the DW when supporters turned up to greet the arrival of the players:

WIGAN Athletic may be join-bottom of the Premier League heading into the final nine games of the campaign.

But Roberto Martinez reckons the club`s supporters are top-of-the-league quality.

The Wigan boss admits he was bowled over by the fans' support both before and during last weekend's 1-1 draw with West Brom.

Several hundred Latics fanatics turned up to the DW Stadium nearly three hours before kick-off to welcome the team into the stadium, and the support once the game began - from a bumper crowd of over 21,000, was as partisan as could be.

Martinez admitted to being disappointed the team couldn't respond with the three points against the Baggies - only converting one of the 20 chances they created on the day.

But he says if the fans keep their end of the bargain, the team will oblige with another 'Great Escape'.

'I have to say that the performance from the fans at the weekend was absolutely outstanding,' Martinez told the Evening Post.

'It was a great feeling to feel the warmth from the fans, hours before kick-off.

'It was a special touch, something we didn't expect, that I feel galvanised our performance from the first minute.

'That feeling allowed us to relax, to focus on the performance and it really showed on the pitch.

'The truth is the fans were the ones who instigated the level of performance against West Brom, and we were a football club to be very proud of.

'That fills me with real joy and excitement for the rest of the season.'

With the obvious positive effect that showing support in this way has on the players how can we as fans not continue to do this? Stoke City arrive at the DW on Saturday for another tough and important game, we'll be there, at the corner of the East and South stands for 12:45pm to ensure that the Latics players are up for the challenge, will you join us?
