Wigan Athletic - 12th Man - 19/04/12

This weeks Wigan Evening Post 12th Man page has two contributions from Vital Latics:

Oh, What A Feeling!

What a fantastic feeling, not only have we hauled ourselves out of the bottom three, but we have taken on and beaten the country's finest in doing so. Following the Arsenal win Latics boss Roberto Martinez said that this recent set of results was no accident, he's right, the way the team have been playing these past few weeks has been more like top four form than that of a relegation threatened side.

Manchester United were destroyed at the DW Stadium last Wednesday, Fergies men were outplayed, out thought and out fought, not often you say that about United. On to this Monday and although the Latics came under a bit of pressure they held their nerve and ran out worthy winners against Arsenal, two goals to the good inside the first eight minutes, I thought that we had scored too early and we were sure to face an Arsenal onslaught, oh me of little faith, trust in Martinez, he had the measure of Wenger just has he'd had the measure of Ferguson the week before.

The reaction of both Robin van Persie and Arsene Wenger at the end of the game was very satisfying, both shunned the gesture of handshakes from Martinez and Caldwell showing that they had been soundly beaten and underlying what gems we have at our club. Throughout the dark days when we were struggling for points neither the Latics boss or the skipper lost their dignity and they were always magnanimous in defeat not like the high and mighty of the Gunners, little Wigan hey.

After the Arsenal game both Caldwell and Martinez spoke of the job not being done yet, about keeping their feet on the floor and carrying on with the hard work, hopefully that will carry on at Craven Cottage on Saturday when the Latics tackle Fulham, another difficult game but riding on the crest of a wave, the Latics could well make survival just a little closer come 5pm, feet on the floor? Not a chance I'm lapping up every minute.

It Feels Very Good!

There is a children's tale about the tortoise and the hare. We probably planned to be the tortoise and cross the line just in time at the end of the race. We have taken the Hare's route and are almost across the line thanks to fantastic efforts of players supporters alike. It feels good, very good. I don't think there is a better place to be than Wigan today. In the wake of drought and hosepipe bans down south, we can even be thankful for the rain.

In recent weeks I've suggested the fixtures are lining up just right. Every game in our recent run has presented fresh challenges, and there has been no room for complacency to creep in after each fantastic result. Now we come up against an opponent who on recent form we would be expected to get something from and the pressure is different. Rather than rest like the hare we need to go to Fulham, and exact revenge for the defeat they inflicted upon us at the DW earlier in the season. That was one of the days when the support was divided. The faithful pointing to the performance, the pessimistic pointing to the result. Quite simply we owe Fulham, let's cross that line, secure the points and start to build for next year.

The next big strength we will show is the squad, and the lack of the usual rebuilding exercise that we will need to undertake at the end of the season. We are showing that we should be the exact mid table team that tends to tempt our players away each summer. We have no loan players to go back and weaken the squad, we have a young squad. We have players that are fighting to break through from the development squad. We should be able to start next season going from strength to strength. Never mind seven seasons in the top flight, it's nearly eight and counting.

The strengths in this club has been clearly displayed for those that wanted to see it for a while now. Whilst our rivals have swapped managers, spent money, and have protesting fans. We have united as fans, united as a squad, and united as a club. The result is a run of form which is enviable across the whole country. We have the best Management team in the country, the best supporters in the country, and at the moment the best team in the country.

the problem is though worbo is that if we get the points that we need when we play fulham at the cottage at the weekend is that we will take our foot of the gas and stop trying like we have done in the past and the display of football won`t be has god as at the moment
