Whelan On Martinez - Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has spoken about Roberto Martinez and his decision to stay at the Latics despite interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Aston Villa, over to you Dave:

'Roberto is staying at Wigan and of course I am absolutely delighted. He was never offered the job at Liverpool because he wasn't happy with the way the job was presented to him.

'He has had some talks with Villa but he's not going to go there. Villa are a fantastic club with great supporters but I never thought they were big enough for him.

'If Roberto is to go anywhere, it will be to one of the top clubs in Europe. We're just so pleased he's staying with us for another season.'

Good for you to keep your Manager, and it looks like disappointment for Swansea and Norwich. I do think that Dave Whelan has FAR too much to say for himself, and the truth is sometimes secondary to his ego. At least now we have the Mcleish burden off our backs we can look forward to our football again. I do rate Martinez, but I rate Lambert highly as well. Who was Loverpool and Villa first choice? Who knows, certainly not Dave Whelan

Whelan is full of crap, Liverpool never offered him the job, Villa never offered him the job. I don't doubt they spoke to him to see what he could offer the clubs. This guy has spent three years in the bottom five of the Premier League, he has had decent players and some money to spend. He would've failed miserably at Liverpool or Villa. He isn't good enough for either club and certainly not good enough for a major European Club. He obviously knows this and knows he is safe with his master puppeteer Whelan.

Martinez too big for villa? You having a laugh?? He can't handle a big club it seems - whelan is a complete pr!ck as I hope Wigan go down next season just so he can keep his gob shut

He's too big for his own boots, Wigan and Martinez have done nothing but survive relegation year in year out since they came to the premiership, cant see no progression there at all. I admire his loyalty towards Wigan, but this top european job isn't happening unless he has a better job.

Dave whelan seems to be the spokesman of all things-the affairs of Villa, Liverpool, Manchester utd. He's a bit of an embarrasment. No offence to Wigan but the best thing that could happen for them next season is if they go down so he (whelan) can develop a sense of humility or at least shut up for a while

As you can tell, a lot of Villa fans are upset with DW's comments! I can see that he's talking from the heart but he's also offending our club in the process whether he realises it or not. Personally I think he'd do well to back Martinez with some serious funds if he wants to get Wigan challenging the top 10 again, and maybe keep his nut down for a bit instead of lauding his manager daily.

A right pair of love birds. I hope Martinez does one and your crappy tiny northern club club gets relegated.

I actually like Wigan and admire them for what they have achieved in what is basically a 'Rugby town' BUT Whelan is far too opionated and should keep those opions to Wigan Athletic and NOT other bigger and more succesful clubs
