With Wigan Athletic news at something of a lull following the frenzy of the Martinez saga, I thought it would be a good time to reflect back on last season and examine one or two areas, first off is, who was our most improved player last term?
I have set up a poll on the right side of this page for you to vote in with five candidates, which I will discuss the merits of below, my five are Franco Di Santo, Victor Moses, Jordi Gomez, Gary Caldwell and James McArthur
Franco Di Santo
What a season the young Argentine has had, leading goal scorer with seven Premier League goals, one or two claims for goal of the season in there as well, 7 goals in 24 starts also suggests that his strike rate has improved somewhat, but his all round game and overall contribution this season has been fantastic, leading the line superbly, especially in the final third of the season, a great contribution to what was a memorable run-in

Victor Moses
This season has seen Moses start to realise his potential, he featured in every Premier League game for the Latics making 36 starts, considering that he is still only 21 and obviously lacking in experience this is a great stat. Moses finished the season with six Premier League goals and like Di Santo there were one or two special ones in the mix
Undoubtedly talented with bags of pace, Moses needed to learn to be a team player this season, as the games wore on this element most definitely improved and he also played his part in the fantastic end to the season

Jordi Gomez
Gomez finished the season with a respectable 5 Premier League goals from 24 starts, his form improved significantly as the season wore on, always noted as a technically gifted player it was his adaption to the English game that was sometimes questioned, his appearance in the 81st minute against Stoke put paid to that argument when he made two crunching tackles in the space of two minutes

Gary Caldwell
Caldwell came into his own when Martinez switched to a 3-4-3 formation, the club skipper hardly put a foot wrong from Christmas onwards, he was an inspiration on the field and his winning goal at Anfield in March was simply sublime
The Latics skipper's form was superb as the season played out and he managed to score 3 goals from 36 Premier League starts

James McArthur
What a fantastic run-in for McArthur, hardly featuring throughout the season, McArthur was introduced as a 70th minute substitute in the 3-1 defeat away at Spurs in January.
Following his cameo at White Hart Lane, Latics boss Roberto Martinez said that he'd seen something in the last 20 minutes that told him we'd be fine. How right he was, McArthur kept his place alongside James McCarthy in the heart of the Latics midfield for the rest of the season, he scored the winning goal at Bolton three weeks later and his performances, harrying and chasing, winning the ball and keeping possession have been a feature of the good run
McArthur also gets forward well and 3 Premier League goals in his 18 starts also suggests he has an eye for finishing
