Most Improved Latic - James McArthur

Most improved Latic over the last season? Well, according to our latest poll, that'd be James McArthur

McArthur had only made six Premier League starts in his eighteen months with the club before he got the nod for the home game with Everton on the 4th February, he kept his place in the team from then on in, making 15 consecutive appearances and it was no coincidence that as he grew into the team, the team went on to have an amazing run amassing 28 points and suffering just three defeats to secure Premier League status for another term

The young Scot came of age at the back end of the season, always noted as a grafter, McArthur added composure and responsibility to his game, he also finished the season off with three goals, the most memorable being the winner at the Reebok in the derby game against Bolton on the 11th February

McArthur's challenge now is to build on that form and carry it through to the next campaign, without doubt he can be a big, big player for the Latics and in some quarters he has already been mooted as a future club captain

McArthur has been rewarded for his fantastic form with a contract extension at the Latics, he is now signed up until 2016 and the gaffer really does think highly of him, Martinez say's: 'James has grown since the day he arrived at Wigan Athletic'

'His attitude, desire and daily standards make him an example for any young professional footballer.

'This season he has managed to put all the hard work in the training ground into effective performances on the pitch, helping the team to achieve outstanding results against the best sides in European football.

'We are all very proud of James at this moment, but still very aware that at his age the best footballing years still to come.'

For the record the voting was:

James McArthur - 53%
Franco Di Santo - 31%
Gary Caldwell - 9%
