Comedy Moments - Wigan Athletic

What is your funniest, most comical memory of being a Wigan Athletic supporter?

Down the years there have been some antics on the pitch that have brought a chuckle, also stories of goings on, at the training ground and in the dressing room at the club have brought a tear of laughter to the eye

One that made me laugh at the time was back in the 1983/84 season when striker John Fashanu turned up at Springfield Park with a very physical Lincoln City, half way through the second half, after dishing out a fair bit of stick to the Latics defenders, Fashanu fell heavily under, what would be right to call a robust challenge round about the half-way line. It transpired that he had cracked two ribs and would need to be stretchered off

Latics trainer/physio at the time was Kenny Banks, a 61 year old stalwart with the club, now Kenny ran on with the stretcher (the days before paramedics) and together with the Lincoln trainer placed, an obviously distressed Fashanu onto the stretcher

Fashanu was a big lad back then, Kenny Banks didn't look to be the strongest of men, in fact he looked his age of 61 plus a bit more, as Kenny and the Lincoln trainer attempted to lift the stretcher you could tell it was a real struggle for them

They managed to get it up but they started to sway, the crowd just knew what was coming next, it was like a scene from a Carry On movie, Fashanu was rolled off the stretcher from waist height as the two were struggling to keep their balance and Kenny Banks and the Lincoln trainer both crashed down on top of Fashanu...Ouch!!!

Very funny to see, thankfully Fashanu made a full recovery and went on to have a good career, but I can't recall any Latics player after that incident needing to be stretchered off the pitch!
