Mr Whelan - Mr Wigan Athletic



Vital Latics member Dave Hayes, aka hayzee, started a great thread in the Vital Latics forum, with Dave's permission it is reproduced here:

I have started this article using his full title of Mr Whelan because I believe he deserves respect. This brings me on to the purpose of this article.

The press and fans of other clubs have been giving our Dave quite a bit of stick over the past few weeks. He has been dubbed a comedian recently and now he is being accused of being greedy. One comment posted on an article actually stated that Wigan would still be in the bottom tier of football if it wasn't for DW 'buying' Wigan into the prem.

Firstly, how do they think Manchester City won the title this year? Did they think it was a remarkably lucky string of events, or maybe was it that the new owners stuck the odd few bob in and bought the odd player or two.

Secondly, I wholeheartedly agree, Wigan probably WOULD be in the bottom tier if it wasn't for this wonderful and remarkable man.

Dave Whelan speaks his mind. I have yet to hear him say anything that either didn't need saying or wasn't true.

He also speaks with experience being an ex footballer himself. He isn't some rich, foreign businessman who woke up one morning and fancied owning a premiership team.

He BUILT this team. He appointed managers and financed the purchase of players to do a job in each division. We are STILL making progress. This club is growing and going places.

To any fans of any other teams reading this, have some respect for a man who has achieved such a remarkable feat. A man who has probably forgotten more about football than you will ever know. He may be outspoken and cantankerous but the man is a business genius...and what is more HE'S LATICS THROUGH AND THROUGH.
