Vital Latics Top 50 - Harry Lyon

Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero's, these are being published in no particular order:

Harry Lyon

Harry Lyon is the embodiment of a true legend to all older fans of Wigan Athletic. Harry scored 273 goals for Wigan and holds the club record for goals in a season when he scored 67 in 1964/5.

Wigan signed Harry from Burscough in 1962 and he played for the club until 1970.

His now famous FA Cup match appearance in November 1965 is the match that truly made Harry the deserved Wigan legend he was. After earning a 1 - 1 draw away at Doncaster Rovers (Harry, of course, scored the Wigan goal) the replay was held at Springfield Park. After 19 minutes of the replay, Harry was stretchered off with a suspected broken ankle, only to re-appear some time later with a heavily bandaged ankle after being administered with Aspirin and a couple of stiff whiskies!

Harry went on to score a hat-trick to beat the League opposition 3 - 1. Harry was carried from the field on the shoulders of the fans. Surely a wondrous spectacle for the 7,113 deliriously happy fans who witnessed the match.

Harry died in 1984, but one of the roads build on the site of the old Springfield Park ground now bears his name. A very fitting tribute to this Wigan hero.

I never saw Harry play, so I feel like I have really missed out, but I did play football both with and against his former son-in-law, very tenuous link there I know...straws grasping etc!

I played with the Son-in-laws son....straws grasping further!

You've done me there Chris...at least the son-in-laws son would have had Lyon blood running through his veins
