Vital Latics Top 50 - Lee McCulloch

Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero's, these are being published in no particular order:

Lee McCulloch

Forget Victor Moses, 'Super' Lee McCulloch was the original goalscoring Wigan winger. Signed as a 23-year-old striker for a club record £700,000 from Motherwell, he was soon converted into a left winger by manager Paul Jewell.

During his seven year association with Wigan, he scored 46 goals from the left hand side, including the all-important opener on that May afternoon when Premier League football was sealed for the first time. Indeed, that season would be his best in front of goal, plundering 14 from midfield in Wigan's promotion push.

Forever a fans favourite for his extraordinary commitment to the cause, the jump in quality to the Premier League was bridged by a never-say-die attitude rarely matched in Wigan's history: few players in the modern game placed their body on the line with such regularity as McCulloch during his two Premier League seasons.

His goalscoring touch didn't desert him either: nine Premier League goals across two years are testament to that.

When he finally moved on in the summer of 2007, a Scottish international, to boyhood club Rangers there was a huge hole to be filled at Wigan.

Mere weeks prior, he had been sent off in his last game for Wigan at Bramall Lane, after two over-eager fouls while striving to keep his club in the top division. The anguish on his face was matched only by the ecstasy shown at the final whistle: a gritty win had just been enough, a performance that perhaps best sums up Lee McCulloch's Wigan career.
