Vital Latics Top 50 - Emile Heskey

Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero's, these are being published in no particular order:

Emile Heskey

As much as we adore those players who light up the scene with their technical brilliance, an uncanny eye for goal or just their god-given natural ability on a football pitch, I have always had a soft spot for the tragically flawed player, and if ever there was one such player in the Latics' ranks it was Emile Heskey.

A record signing for Wigan in 2006, the former Liverpool forward and England international would probably never have found himself playing for Wigan if he had ever owned a pair of shooting boots! In fact, if he had had an aim on him the English media would certainly have proclaimed him 'World Class', and they would not have been far off. Such was the quality of his general forward play when he was at his best.

As it is Heskey has the undoubted honour of being able to write 'Wigan Legend' on his curriculum vitae, leading the line in a Wigan team which in its first years in the Premiership primarily set out to be hard to beat. It is then, perhaps, not surprising that the fondest memory most Latics fans have of Emile Heskey is of his heroic defensive display in the dramatic win over Sheffield United which secured the Latics' survival in the 06/07 campaign by the smallest margin possible.

That game at Bramall Lane saw Heskey put in one of the greatest performances by a Latics player in our time in the Prem League
