Vital Latics Top 50 - Nathan 'Duke' Ellington

Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero's, these are being published in no particular order:

Nathan Ellington

When the 'Duke' signed for the Latics in March 2002 us Latics fans held high hopes for the old Division Three goal machine and he didn't let us down, scoring on both his debut and home debut. In his first season as a blue Ellington grabbed 22 goals in all competitions as the Latics won the league and gained promotion to the Championship for the first time. In the 03-04 season the Latics narrowly missed out on a play off place, with Ellington scoring 19 goals along the way.

It was in the famous 2004-2005 season when Ellington the Latics legend was born, he was the Leagues top goal scorer with 24 goals and formed a formidable strike partnership with fellow Latics legend Jason Roberts, with the pair taking the championship by storm with 45 goals between them, with these goals helping little Wigan achieve the unthinkable, promotion to the Premier League!

However, within all the excitement of the Premier League and the huge games and experiences that were to follow the dream of seeing the 'Duke' and Roberts tearing up the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool was short lived when Ellington left for a then record fee of 3,000,001 to fellow Premier League club West Bromwich Albion.

Nathan 'The Duke' Ellington was the first real Latics goal scorer that I ever saw and the days of the Duke bagging goal after goal still live in my memory. He was part of the team that made all of our wildest dreams come true and was also part of arguably the Wigan Athletic's best ever strike partnership and I think I speak for all Latics fans when I say that it is a real shame that the Legendary partnership of Ellington and Roberts was never unleashed onto the Premier League.

It is a great pity that we never saw Ellington and Roberts together in the Prem
