Vital Latics Top 50 - Maynor Figueroa

Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero's, these are being published in no particular order:

Maynor Figueroa

Appearances: 126 (and still counting)
Greatest Moment: The wonder goal, from inside his own half, against Stoke! It was chosen as the goal of the season by the majority of football pundits.

Maynor Figueroa joined Latics on loan from C.D Olimpia on two separate spells in 2008 before eventually signing a permanent deal in December of the same year. In Figueroa, Latics recruited perhaps one of the most consistent players to have graced Wigan in the Premier League era.

Wearing the Number 31 shirt, Figueroa has produced spectacular defensive performances on the left side of defence, becoming part of the real solid backbone of the team. He has been a players and fans favourite throughout his time at Latics, hardly ever dropping out of the starting 11.

However, Maynor's talent has not stopped with his defensive capability. He has been a vital player in attack, helping to create opportunities with long searching balls and pin point passes. A prime example being on the final day of the 2010/11 season away at the Britannia Ground Stoke, when Maynor launched a inch perfect cross onto Hugo Rodallega's head to score the goal to keep Wigan in the Premier League.

Manynor's and one of Latics most famous moments came, again against Stoke in December 2009. From behind the half way line Figueroa quickly took a free kick and smashed the ball seemingly as hard as possible before watching it fall into the Stoke net, truly a spectacular goal!

This has been the highlight of a long and continuously successful time at Wigan. Long may it continue.
