Vital Latics Top 50 - Henri Camara

Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero's, these are being published in no particular order:

Henri Camara

Honours:
Once the highest scorer in the premiership for Wigan
Record signing fee in 2005

Henri Camara joined Wigan Athletic in August 2005 as a record £3.1 million signing. With lighting pace and a bad boy reputation, many thought little Wigan were taking a BIG risk with a player that could not settle.

During the 2005-2006 season Camara certainly clicked (sorry could not resist) scoring 12 goals. The highlights being his first hat trick against Charlton and scoring against Bolton, which enabled Wigan to get their first win against local rivals for 12 years.

His goal celebrations were always entertaining with or without Chimbonda. My favourite was when he scored against Aston Villa and did a "Juan Pablo Angel" impression - not sure how many other supporters knew about this, as at the time the one and only (as I recall) Mexican wave was happening at the JJB/DW.

The 2006 -2007 season was stop start due to injury. One of his best goals was against Sunderland on Saturday 11 March 2006, a brilliant volley which eluded keeper Kelvin Davies. This is still one of the greatest goals scored by a Wigan player.

During the 2007 - 2008 season, out of favour with Steve Bruce, Henri went on an unsuccessful loan to West Ham.

He returned to the Wigan for the following season. The main highlight was him coming off the bench to score the winning goal, a six yard tap in from a Valencia cross, against Everton on 24 November 2008.

During February 2009 he was loaned to Stoke. At the time Henri said 'I want to say a really big thank-you to the Wigan fans, who have been magnificent to me. I will never forget that, and the club will always stay in my heart.'

End the end of the 2009 season with no permanent deal from Stoke or Wigan he was released.

If Wigan were not riding on the crest of the premiership wave, Henri could be considered just an average player, but we were and he was fantastic!
