Vital Latics Top 50 - Emmerson Boyce
Vital Wigan members and posters have produced a Latics Top 50 Footballers list and there are some great players on that list and their names really do conjure up some fantastic memories. The members of Vital Latics have also created some very unique pen-pictures of their hero's, these are being published in no particular order:
Mr Reliable, Mr Approachable, Mr Dependable, Mr No 17, even Mr Wigan Athletic could all be used for Emmerson Orlando Boyce.
Emmerson signed for Wigan from Crystal Palace on 1 August 2006 on a four year deal. It was a new challenge and new start for him. Boyce said at the time "Wigan seemed the perfect choice for me. The people are nice and friendly up North too but I am not sure about the accent though".
He made 34 league appearances during the season narrowly missing out on the Player of the Year award. He helped the club avoid relegation on the final day of the season in a 2-1 win against Sheffield United.
After Wigan`s poor start to the season 2007 -2008, Boyce returned to the starting line-up, which saw an upturn in results. He made 25 league appearances. On 9 November 2008, he scored his first goal for Wigan, a bullet 87th minute header from the edge of the area, produced a fortunate 2-1 win against West Bromwich Albion.
In July 2009, he signed a new contract at Wigan, keeping him at the club until 2012.
The 2009-2010 season provided limited appearances due to the signing of Gary Caldwell in the January transfer window. He still played 24 times and scored three goals.
During 2010 -2011 season he suffered an injury whilst playing against Bolton Wanderers in October. He was initially expected to recover in two weeks, but was sidelined for considerably longer. With Boyce backability he returned to the side in the FA Cup on 8 January 2011.
In the final game of this season against Stoke, he made a goal line clearance in the first half to keep the score level. Wigan went on to win the game 1-0, securing Premier League survival on the last day of the season for a second time.
Boyce was the only Wigan player to play in both the Stoke game and the match against Sheffield United in 2007.
During August 2011, Boyce signed a new two-year contract with the club.
During the 2011 -2012 season Wigan moved to the 3-4-3 formation, giving Emmerson more freedom. You would see him running the wing getting into the oppositions penalty box, just as much as defending his own. One of his "rolls boyce" performances was against Spurs, when he had Gareth Bale in his back pocket. In the final match against Wolves, he scored two goals. One was a spectacular volley from outside the penalty box, which any striker would be proud of.
The Boyce has done good and is a firm fans favourite! He was given the outstanding achievement award at the end of season awards 2012 and holds the club's record for most appearances in the Premier League cementing his legendary status.
Ole ole ole ole Boycie, Boycie!
