Wigan Athletic Fans New Season Hopes & Fears #4

Wigan Athletic Fans New Season Hopes & Fears #4

Vital Latics brings you the Wigan Athletic fans 'Hopes and Fears' series as we build up to the seasons big kick-off against Chelsea.

Wigan Athletic supporter and Vital Latics member, pienpeys, aka Carl Davies, gives us his thoughts on the coming season, over to you Carl:

Well, we are about to end silly season and kick on with the real season. The last few months have been one hell of a roller coaster ride, both on and off the pitch. From looking dead and buried, we pulled off a minor miracle and ended up finishing a lot more comfortably than many would have thought.

Throughout this, a lot of bonding went on with supporters, players and manager. So into the silly season and all we've had is not if, but when Martinez would leave. It hasn't happened and we approach season number 8 with both optimism and fear.

New season ticket and for the first time ever a Supporters Club membership. As last season came to a close, I'm sure I wasn't the only one wanting it go on forever, we were finally the best team in the league and this desire not to miss anything has now been replaced by excitement at a new one starting.

Now I'll try to put across some hopes and fears of my own.

Hopes:

I hope Victor Moses stays although that doesn't look good. So I hope we get great replacements for not just him, but the few more who have left. Hugo Rodallega and Momo Diame were without doubt key players in our squad and I hope we find replacements who go on to be even better than they were.

I hope the town get's behind the Latics a lot more. Irrespective of the effect of attendances, I want to see our stadium full on numerous occasions and season ticket sales going into the record books.

One last thing, I hope we send West Ham down again and come back from 2-0 down, we come back from 2-0 down to beat Arsenal, we beat Man Utd at Old Trafford and Liverpool finish below us.

Fears:

A fear that hangs around at the end of each season revolves around the transfer window. Will our fantastic squad still be together when the season kicks off, well that looks like a fear realised.

Will we get good replacements? This is still a fear, but one that's not sorted at the moment. I'm certainly fearful of kicking off the new campaign without a few more good signings.

Off the pitch, it's a fear that fans will sink back to where we were before we took action prior to the West Brom match last season. Such fantastic support, arguably the best in the league and then to receive thanks from those people you admire is something else. I just hope we don't wait until the fat lady gets ready to sing before giving no less than 100% support ever again.

Key player:

I think this is hard as I see two or three players who could be key and so cannot not mention Gary Caldwell, Ali Al Habsi, McArthur, McCarthy and so on.

I could not have decided between two players, one who look`s set to leave, so the other is my key player. Shaun Maloney showed that when he`s on fire he can break down the best defences in the league and boy can he raise the atmosphere with wonder goals.

So, we move on to the bit I was scared of:Predictions:

Premier League: 8th
Carling Cup: 1stRound
FA Cup: Winners
Player of the Year: Victor Moses (please stay) Shaun Maloney.
Players Player Of The Year: Gary Caldwell
Vital Player Of The Year: Ali Al Habsi
