What a fantastic end to last season, the players and fans together made Wigan Athletic the talk of the Premier League, superb performances, massive victories and rousing support saw the Latics not only retain their Premier League status, but retain it in style
Now we are on the verge of the new campaign, first up for the Latics is the challenge of facing the European Champions when Chelsea visit the DW Stadium this Sunday, the Sky Sports camera's will be there to televise the first live game of the season, what a mouth watering contest it promises to be
The feel good factor that helped the team achieve those remarkable results last season was in no small way down to the initiative shown by the Latics fans, they got down to the DW Stadium early to meet the players as they arrived for the games and show that they were 100% committed and behind the team even when things weren't going too well
The Meet & Greets were identified by Roberto Martinez, Gary Caldwell, Franco Di Santo, James McArthur, Emmerson Boyce, Ali Al Habsi and other Latics staff as a defining moment that gave them the belief that they could compete with the best the Premier League has to offer. Below are some quotes about the Mett & Greets:
Roberto Martinez: 'It was a great feeling to feel the warmth from the fans, hours before kick-off.'
Ali Al-Habsi: 'The fans make such a difference and once again they were amazing'
Emmerson Boyce: 'It was great to see the fans welcoming us in to the stadium at the start of the day and they carried that feeling over into the game.'
Gary Caldwell: 'The welcome from the fans before the West Brom game was massive and all the players commented on it beforehand.
'We felt the support from the fans and you need that as a player when you're in the position we're in.
'It can be too easily to let your head drop and allow negative thoughts to affect your performance, but when you see the fans come out like that and show what it means to them it gives you a big boost.'
This Sunday we'll be back, meeting the players as they arrive for the first game of the new season, we'll let them know that our support is solid and that from the off we are behind them, will you join us?
Kick-off is 1:30pm so we will meet at the corner of the East/South sands at 11:30am and give the players a rousing reception, it will also be a warm welcome to the new men Fraser Fyvie and Ivan Ramis, plus the two other new comers due in this week. So join us and let's start the new season where we left the old one, firmly behind the greatest club in the world, C'MON YOU LATICS!
I'm a believer!![]()
