Key Wigan Athletic midfield man James McArthur has used the recent international break to work on his early season fitness and completely get over his niggling back injury
The Scotland international missed a large chunk of preseason and only featured in the last 10 minutes of the final friendly game away at Celta Vigo, but such is his importance to the Latics, Martinez had no hesitation in throwing the former Hamilton man into action for the opening game of the new campaign against Chelsea
McArthur has started all three games so far this season but failed to finish any, usually departing around the 80 minute mark and obviously struggling with fitness, so this break looks to have come at just the right time for the 24 year old.
Speaking to the Latics official website McArthur said: 'The international break has come at a perfect time for me because I've needed this bit of time to get my back better and make sure it is going to be right for the rest of the season.
'I like going away with the national team and it is good to get away usually because you just want to keep up that rhythm of playing games.
'Obviously I really want to be there representing my country but at the same time I think I've needed this week to focus on my own fitness because first and foremost I need to be fit to play for the Club.'
