John Bond

John Bond

News has broken that John Bond passed away today, at the age of 79.

Bond had a good career as a full back with West Ham, making nearly 400 appearances over 16 years, but it is as a manager that he is mainly remembered, making his name with Bournemouth he then moved to Norwich, spending seven years at Carrow Road before joining Manchester City and taking them to Wembley for the 1981 FA cup final in his first season in charge

Bond worked closely at both Norwich and Man City with his close friend John Benson, when Benson was in the hot seat at Wigan Athletic he turned to his mentor and brought Bond to the Latics to assist him in managerial duties, both coaching and scouting new players, Bond was 67 at the time.

Latics had one of their best ever starts to a season under the guidance of Bond and Benson as they steam rolled the league up until Christmas. Unfortunately promotion could not be gained, we lost in the play-off finals to Gillingham at Wembley, Benson moved to Director of Football at the end of the season and John Bond left the club

Condolences to John Bonds family on their sad loss
