'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Ex-Latic Jimmy Bullard Retires From Football

Former Wigan Athletic player Jimmy Bullard has called time on his career and decided to hang up his boots, this comes following advice from his specialist about his persistent knee injury that was first suffered whilst playing for Fulham at Newcastle

Bullard joined MK Dons in the summer and it was through their official website that he announced his retirement, he said - 'My old knee injury has never allowed me to get back to where I want to be as a football player; it's always hindered me'

'There are a lot of games in this league and I now know my knee won't allow me to play Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday, it's not built for that now.

'I want to be out there playing but at the same time I know my knee won't allow me to play at my best and to keep my place in the team. I'm hindering myself more than I am helping myself for the future.

'In the summer I knew I wanted to give it one last crack and show people what I could do. But what I think with my strong head and what I could physically do are two different things. My head tells me I can do it, but my body tells me, no, Jim, you can't.'

Bullard joined the Latics in 2003 from Peterborough for £125,000, he was a mainstay in the team during his years under then manager Paul Jewells guidance, he was sensational as the Latics stormed through the divisions to reach the Premier League in 2005 and the Carling Cup final in 2006

After 145 appearances and 10 goals, Fulham exercised a clause in Bullards contract and signed him for £2.5 million in May 2006

Whilst with the Cottagers Jimmy ruptured his knee ligaments on two separate occasions, he did the same thing again when making his debut for Hull City in January 2009

Bullard will be fondly remembered by all Latics fans, he was a real character and his infectious personality made life at Wigan a fantastic experience for supporters and players during his time at the club

Best wishes Jimmy from all at Vital Latics in whatever you decide to do in the future
