We're Supporting Joseph's Goal - Wigan Athletic

Joseph's Goal is an appeal to raise funds and awareness for the condition NKH (Non-Ketotic Hyperglycinemia). Children with this condition have a problem breaking down the amino acid glycine.

This is caused by a defect in the genetic code for the machinery that is responsible for the glycine breakdown (called glycine cleavage enzyme).

Excessive glycine disrupts the function of the brain, symptoms include seizures, low tone, and severe problems with learning and development. This can profoundly affect a child's ability to learn and to do normal things such as eating, sitting, and walking. The seizures can be so severe that they are hardly controlled despite the use of several medications for seizures.

Joseph Kendrick is the son of the Wigan Evening Post's Latics correspondent Paul Kendrick and his wife Emma, Joseph was diagnosed with NKH at just a week old, Paul and Emma were told by the doctors that it would be unlikely that Joseph would live past 10 days. Joseph battled through and is now three years old and is doing remarkably well considering his condition.

He still has seizures, but he now takes medicine to help control them. Paul and Emma were told that he would never be able to feed, but he is now completely orally fed and loves his food. Paul say's - 'As parents, we are very proud of our strong and resilient little boy. He has done so well and so far has exceeded all expectations.

"He has shown us that he wants to fight all the way'

Paul and Emma have decided that they want to launch an appeal, Joseph's Goal, to raise funds and awareness for NKH and Wigan Athletic as a club are getting behind the campaign.

Latics chief executive Jonathan Jackson confirmed the Latics commitment to helping with the campaign when he said - 'Wigan Athletic are pleased to support Joseph's Goal, and intend to help in any way to assist Paul and Emma to raise as much money as possible and increase awareness of this brave little boy, and the rare and under-researched condition that affects Joseph.

"The players and staff met Joseph and immediately wanted to get involved in this important appeal, to help him and to fund the research to find a cure for this rare genetic disorder.

'We have seen recently how generous and kind the people of Wigan are upon hearing about such brave families facing difficult situations, and we have no doubt that this will be the case again.

'We will do whatever we can to help this thoroughly-deserving appeal.'

It goes without saying that all the Latics community are 100% behind this appeal, there are a number of events in the pipeline which will be publicised soon.
