Wigan Athletic 12th Man - 12/10/12

This weeks Wigan Evening Post 12th man feature has two contributions from Vital Latics

Front Three Looking Good

The old adage of, if you ask enough times then you will receive certainly rang true for Everton on Saturday, players dropping like flies in the box at the merest of touches, sometimes none at all, arms aloft in protest was finally rewarded on the 84th minute when the referee succumbed and gave the penalty Everton had been chasing the entire second half

It had to be Bainesy who popped in the late equaliser to leave us all frustrated and disappointed at the result, but in the cold light of day it as to be said that it was a good point against a good team in top form, and it also brought to an end our Premier League losing streak before it started to get out of hand.

Casting our minds back to last February it was Everton at home that started the great run that we put in to the end of the season, a good display that day once again saw us leave the ground disappointed following a late equaliser, but that game was the catalyst for the remainder of the season, if we can build on the performance from last Saturday in the same way then we are in for an exciting few months ahead.

Saturday's game saw the combination of Kone, Di Santo and Maloney go onto another level. The three front players were excellent and they are starting to gel into a very effective attacking force, a goal apiece from Di Santo and Kone also suggests that we have a couple of strikers that have the ability to convert the chances this season, all very exciting

A pity now that we are faced with yet another international break, we could have done with a game midweek in all honesty to build on Saturday, we'll just have to kick on at the Liberty Stadium when we travel to Swansea next time out, after all we do have a score to settle with them from last season

It's All Looking Good

Saturdays visit by Everton was a very entertaining afternoon. As I suspect is the case with most people, I'd have taken a point prior to kick off. Walking off the ground, I was disappointed with just a point, but after a period of reflection (and viewing a rerun of the highlights), a well earned point against a good team that are flying, is probably about right.

That leaves us where we were last year in terms of points, but much better placed in terms of squad, morale and general outlook. The teams we have played so far, have on the whole been better than the teams we played at this stage last year, and despite having the same number of points, we have played better than we did last season at this stage. All in all it's looking more positive than it did last season, and we are almost guaranteed to do better over the next few games than last season.

The problem is that the international break now looms, followed by an away game at Swansea. Unless you travel, it's a lack of live action for 2 weeks, but at least we then get 2 home games in a week as compensation.

The action(?) from yesterday's game at the DW Stadium between Wigan Athletic and Nottingham Forest which ended goalless:

Report - Latics 0 Forest 0 - What A Shocker

Thirteen games to save our Championship status, first up a home game against Nottingham Forest who are on a shocking run of form, conceded 10 goals in their last three matches, three of their first choice defenders missing through injury, they had lost 11 of their 16 away games this season with a -16 goal difference on the road and sat just six points above us in the table, surely a game that we would set out to win.

Checking the team selection I felt slightly optimistic but slightly conf
