Getting The Oppo's View - Latics v West Brom

Getting The Oppo's View - Latics v West Brom

Vital Wigan and Vital West Brom met up for a quick Q&A session, well I emailed my West Brom counterpart Baggies Boy a few questions, let's take a look at his answers:

You must be really pleased with the start to the season, surprised or expected?

Very pleased, after last season and with the change in head coach, most of us were hoping we could at least match what we achieved last season, or at worst maybe a place or two difference, but I don't think anybody expected us to have the start and be putting in the performances we are.

Steve Clarke has really hit the ground running and built on our strengths so the transition has almost been seamless really and we are reaping the rewards of that at the moment.

Steve Clarke, an appointment out of the blue but he appears to be doing a great job, what were your initial thoughts and how do you feel now?

There were many who were sceptical about his appointment but I was quite pleased as I thought he would do well, just not as quickly.

I thought he would prove to be somebody over time who has a great management career ahead of him, and with our set up it does play to his strengths in coaching terms, and then he has others to learn from when it comes to the other aspects of full management.

With his coaching ethos and backing I also thought he would be a good replacement for Roy, but as said even those excited by him joining us never foresaw the start to the season we have had, we did expect a few more bumps than we've actually had.

I'm not convinced we'll be able to keep this form up for the whole season, but it's the perfect start to build on and I'm certainly not going to complain. Just have to keep at the back of your mind that he is new to the job, mistakes will be made as we go, so we can't get too carried away when form does dip, just as we shouldn't get too carried whilst we're flying.

Have you signed any players during the summer that look like becoming firm favourites at the Hawthorns?

Claudio Yacob is turning out to be a complete steal for a free transfer. Romelu Lukaku is probably already a hero, it's just a shame it's a loan deal, as for the others, we've seen signs from them, but those two are the stand out deals of the summer so far.

Out of your team who would you pick as your danger man...or men?

Any of our front line. It's difficult to pick out an individual this season, because if we don't start Odemwingie or Long, it means Gera and Lukaku and Clarke has been rotating them around a fair bit as games go, so we have something different up front each time.

If you were scouting for Steve Clarke ahead of Saturdays game, which of our players would you tell him as caught your eye and why?

Shaun Maloney seems in good form from what I've seen, and Arouna Kone seems to be very troublesome from the highlights I've seen of you this season.

I'm quite optimistic about both West Broms and Latics seasons, I don't think either of us will win the league but both clubs should have a decent campaign without fear of relegation, how do you see it panning out?

There are far worse teams in the league this season for either club to be too worried about a relegation battle I think. I haven't seen enough of you to really judge, but with the way you are playing this season I think you will be quite comfortable compared to previous seasons, and to be honest I'd take an 8th place finish now if it was handed to us. I don't see us slipping below 10th as the league progresses, and for us, anything above 10th is progress again.

Prediction time, how do you see the game going?

I can see a tight 2-2 to be honest.

Many thanks to Baggies Boy for taking the time to answer the questions. There is an interview with yours truly over on Vital West Brom
