'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Dave Whelan Honoured With Lifetime Award

Wigan Athletic owner, chairman and chief benefactor Dave Whelan has been awarded a 'lifetime achievement award' at the 2012 North West Football Awards.

The former Blackburn Rovers defender bought the Latics back in 1995, through his guidance and investment the club not only relocated to a brand new all-seater stadium, but also climbed their way from the bottom of the bottom tier of English league football to the Premier League where we have been for the past eight seasons.

Whelan was shocked to receive the award, which was given to him last night at a ceremony held at Lancashire Cricket Club in Manchester, speaking about the award he said - 'This has come as a total surprise to me. The club is up for Community Awards and I thought I was coming simply to receive those.

'This has been a shock, but I am very grateful.

'I think what we have done at Wigan Athletic is a bit of a fairy tale and it is one that we hope can carry on for many years to come.

'We were at the bottom of the old fourth division when I bought the club in 1995, and to think that this is our eighth consecutive season in the Barclays Premier League is unbelievable.'

Unbelievable indeed, well done to Big Dave
