'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wigan Athletic - 12th Man - 15/11/12

This weeks Wigan Evening Post 12th Man feature has two contributions from Vital Latics:

All Ready For Anfield

I went into last Saturday with very high expectations, two wins on the bounce, surely we were about to get the elusive three game winning streak under our belts, especially considering we were at home and playing West Brom, the Baggies had only picked up two points on their travels this campaign, but football has a way of bringing you back down to earth

We started the game off in exhilarating fashion, I am convinced if we had scored in the first twenty minutes we would have gone on to win the game, but we didn't score and we didn't win, even though I thought we played very well, but that's football

West Brom are an excellent unit, they're disciplined and resolute and can play a bit too, easily understandable why they have had such a good start to the season, their first goal was excellent, fantastic cross from Brunt and a great header from an incoming Morrison, their second a bit more fortunate, but we found ourselves two down with half-time fast approaching

I was thrilled with the way the Latics responded they pulled their socks and tried to make things happen, sometimes trying a little too hard, but Kone got a goal back and with a little rub of the green we'd have got a point from the game, but it wasn't to be

We move on to Liverpool on Saturday, Suarez is looking good but to think they're just a one man team would be to underestimate them at our peril. Having said that what better place than Anfield, the scene of that great win last season, to get the West Brom game out of our system.

If we play to our full potential then we'll cause them more problems than they'll cause us, but it's getting there. We have the dreaded internationals this week, thankfully there aren`t too many Latics players away for this bout of friendlies, but we seem to have picked up a few niggling injuries, Maloney and Ali being added to McArthur and Alcaraz is a cause for concern, here's hoping that they are nothing too serious and we have a fully fit squad raring to go at the weekend

Frustrated We Didn't Get A Point

Whilst Saturday was ultimately a disappointing afternoon, it was not a day to be worried about. We created chances and were easily worth a draw against one of the form teams in the division.

There is no reason to be down hearted, no reason to panic. We were slightly off our game and needlessly conceded possession on several occasions. Whereas this used to be a feature of our team it's becoming far less normal for us to have such a bad day at the office.

It looked like it was going to be a good day for the first 20 minutes where we retained well and probed well. It's not that we were particularly bad after that, but at this point West Brom stepped it up a gear, from then on in they were very sharp to the tackle, pressuring us particularly well.

They also seemed to get lucky in terms of the second ball, as it appeared to bounce and break in their favour an awful lot, but then you make your own luck as they say. Even taking all this into consideration, we created more than enough chances to earn a draw.
