Lawro Predicts - Latics v Manchester United

Mark Lawrenson considers the New Years day fixtures, with the Latics playing Champions elect Manchester United at the DW Stadium it's an easy pick for Lawro, or so he thinks:

Wigan v Manchester United

Manchester United lost to them last season but they usually beat Wigan. The way United are at the moment I can't see them being beaten again by the Latics.

Sir Alex Ferguson rotated his team in the win over West Brom and, while they have not been great defensively, they are seven points clear at the top of the league.

Defensively they will only improve with centre-back Nemanja Vidic back, although I do think they need to make a decision about who their first-choice goalkeeper is.

Wigan played extremely well in beating Aston Villa and it was very comfortable for them.

They are not a bad side and have some good players. In games like this they normally play quite well.

If they set out and try to play United at the passing game then I would worry for them. If they try to close the space down in midfield and stop them playing, I would give them a better chance.

Lawro's prediction: 0-2

Oh ye of little faith, United never do well on New Years day, something to do with birthday celebrations, 1-1 for me

if we score first, we may have a chance since we're one of a few teams unbeaten when we score first. Hope I haven't jinxed it. Would be a great birthday present.
