Latics v Bournemouth - Previous Meetings

Latics tackle Bournemouth this weekend in the 3rd round of the FA cup and it is a case of renewing old acquaintances, down the years the two sides have produced memorable encounters

The first meeting was an old Division 4th clash back in our first season in the league, 31st March 1979, played at Springfield Park, the Latics took all the points with a 1-0 victory

8th May 1993, Dean Court, the game may have ended 0-0 but it will live long in the memory of the 'older' Latics fan, at the end of that game we were relegated for the only time in our history. The sight of a coffin being carried around the away end summed up the feeling of not only the fans but the club itself, a dark day in our past and we felt that it was the slippery slope to oblivion.

If we are looking for omens ahead of Saturday then the two meetings between the clubs in cup competitions favour the Latics

4th January 1986, FA cup 3rd round, Springfield Park, a crowd of 4,185 saw the Latics run out 3-0 winners with goals from Tony Kelly, Colin Methven and Warren Aspinall. Aspinall went on to play for Bournemouth between 1993 & 95

20th September 2005, the last time we played the Cherries, Carling Cup round 2 at the DW (JJB) Stadium, an 86th minute Jason Roberts goal sealed victory for the Latics and broke Bournemouth hearts in front of just 3,346 spectators. We went all the way to the final that season, in fact we didn't concede a goal until the semi's. So in cup competitions it's 2-0 to the Latics

We have played Bournemouth 36 times in all competitions, Latics 14 wins, Bournemouth 13, draws 9
