Chelsea v Wigan Athletic - Previous Encounters

Wigan Athletic and Chelsea have met 20 times in all competitions down the years, the first ever meeting coming in January 1980 when basement club Latics went to Stamford Bridge for a 3rd round FA cup tie and came away with a famous 1-0 victory thanks to a great Tommy Gore goal.

There is a good article with an interview from Tommy on that first meeting, it can be accessed by following the Classic Encounters link

We also knocked the Blues out of the Milk Cup (League cup) a year later in November 1981, two Mark Wignall goals helped the Latics achieve a 4-2 win at Springfield Park, in the Chelsea side that night was a certain Chris Hutchings, who would go on to have great success alongside Paul Jewell at the Latics and, not quite as successfully, manage the club in his own right

Of course our first ever Premier League game was against the then Champions Chelsea, on a bright Sunday in August 2005 Jose Mourinho brought his side to the DW Stadium as a new era in the Latics history kicked-off, although we lost the game in the dying embers to a classic Herman Crespo strike, the club gained a lot of admiration that day and made a lot of new friends

In the previous meetings between the two clubs Latics have 3 wins, Chelsea 14, draws 3

In the Premier League it is 1 win, 1 draw, 13 defeats, with Latics just picking up one point at Stamford Bridge from seven visits, conceding 19 goals, scoring 3, didn't realise it was that bad!
